Data literacy is a critical skill in the 21st century. We believe this new skill will change the world in the same way that literacy transformed access to knowledge in the centuries after the printing press. However, just having access to new technology is not enough. The printing press automated the publishing process, but that still required people to learn to read and write. Similarly, the broad availability of data and analytical tools needs a fundamental change in human behavior. Data literacy is not just about consuming and understanding data visualizations but more importantly about applying the genuinely human traits of curiosity and critical thinking to your data.

Midwest Health Collaborative (MHC) was charged with bringing financial and clinical data to member hospital systems’ to drive population health initiatives. However, complicated charts and clunky reports hindered user adoption.

MHC addressed these challenges thru a user-drive design that enabled a deep understanding of users and their initiatives, to deliver solutions in response to their specific needs.

This is driving superior decision making and measurable value. The Population Health Engine enables executives to instantly identify a strategy to maximize revenue across contracts, contract managers to set tactical plans in line with that strategy, and care coordinators to execute those plans by generating lists of specific patients with quality care gaps for outreach. This is reducing waste and driving rapid responses to shifts in population risks, enabling fast detection of changes in spending and quickly identifying areas of concern for remediation.

As seen in devs on stage, Tableau is bringing powerful new capabilities to interactive analytics. The applications for interactive statistics are profound. For example, identifying time series that are most highly correlated with a selection, cluster analysis applied to interactive outlier detection, baselining a stock’s performance against the market in general, correlating market value of players to their team’s performance in the World Cup, and tracking the turnover of (or time to resell) a selected cohort of properties. We recommend also attending “Ready, Set, Action” for an introduction to concepts applied in this session.

One of the traditional defining principles of data visualization is that the data should drive the design. In fact, google "design-driven data" and, bar only a few exceptions, most results will still have those words in the order "data-driven design." In this session, learn how it’s possible to take an alternative look at data visualization by using real-world designs to create visualizations or data art pieces which remain true to the underlying data. The result is not just a chance to have fun and be creative, but in learning how to work with Tableau to create unusual and eye-catching visualizations, as well as developing a more creative eye, you may gain more technical skills along the way to take into future projects.

Data delivery is an essential factor in Premera’s mission to make healthcare work better.  Premera’s journey to "take data to the edge" was propelled over 5 years ago when Tableau Server was unleashed and made widely available to the analytic community, as an enterprise level analytics distribution platform. In this session we will give practical examples of how we’ve made a number of small changes to improve our adoption along with braving a live demo to show just how quickly our analysts can create production-ready reports.

The ability to enrich Tableau’s powerful visualizations with flexible, secure content has enabled Archetype Consulting customers to realize their own data exploration, insight generation, and constituent service-level goals. In this presentation you'll see Python integration via TabPy server, which can be used to invoke Python libraries for numerical computation, advanced analyses, and machine learning (e.g. Numpy, SciPy, Pandas, and Scikit-learn). Our Python scripts are stored as TabPy server endpoints for ease of use inside Tableau, as well as change management and migration between environments. We'll also share an approach to provide value-added content alongside Tableau Server, including high interest dashboard marks that drill down to secure content generated in real-time. This end-to-end framework for rich content delivery applies both to public datasets and enterprise environments.

In two years’ time, Deutsche Bank’s Tableau adoption has grown exponentially. To support this growing demand and align to bank-wide strategic goals, Deutsche Bank set up a global Center of Practice. This session will walk you through the real-life story of Tableau adoption within a diverse global landscape; from its small beginnings to a dynamic and comprehensive phenomenon. You will hear from one of our Sr. Managers who spearheaded the initial launch of Tableau and how their challenges were met through the construct of the Centre of Practice. We’ll highlight our evolving solution to support enablement, empowerment and enhanced collaboration of our global community through informative intranet sites, interactive discussion boards, virtual classrooms / self-paced training, and business-orientated Tableau ambassadors. This breakout session will explain the queries generated for different user scenarios, from a simple to a complex viz. We will also cover how caching impacts the query generation, how nested calculations, LOD calcs and published scenarios impact queries and their performance. We will go over the different tools available to study the Tableau query performance: Tableau Log Viewer, Tableau performance recording, Tableau visualization of logs, and ART tracing that we have introduced. In the process, we will cover how to narrow down performance issues, root cause to a particular visualization or quick filter.

Need to combine data from disparate sources? Scarier still—do you have data in spreadsheets, databases, and multiple other systems? Is it in the cloud? If reading this just amped up your heart rate, this session is for you. Learn basic techniques needed to bring data together (from all different data sources), and all within Tableau! There are no prerequisites for this session, but it’ll be especially helpful for users who bring a basic knowledge of the Tableau Desktop interface. Expect to master the basics of data blending in Tableau, an intro to cross-database joins, terminology, troubleshooting and more.

Spotify uses Tableau Public as a storytelling tool to share interesting insights about music, artists, and global listening behavior. Spotify Data Visualization Designer, Skyler Johnson, walks through several projects that combine Tableau Public and Spotify data. Alongside each story, learn a Tableau trick or visualization style that helped make each visualization possible, and walk away inspired to think about your own data in a different way.

Over the past number of years, our "Designing Efficient Workbooks" whitepaper has been a popular guide to improving performance. This session, presented by a student of the author, will cover the main causes of slow workbooks and offer practical suggestions on how to improve them. Expect to address topics such as defining efficiency (and why you should care), and diagnosing the cause of slow workbooks (via workbook design, the query, the data source, or environmental factors).

Tableau's global corporate treasury team is the central bank of the company and is responsible for managing all aspects of banking services, cash and liquidity management, payment operations, foreign exchange risk, investments, ecommerce and corporate credit cards. This session will demonstrate how we use Tableau to manage a growing and complex global treasury.

After the acquisition of the Hyper database technology, we shipped Tableau 10.5 with our brand-new Hyper data engine. This deep-dive talk sheds a light on Hyper's design philosophy and highlights the context in which the Hyper project was started. We use real-world analogies to illustrate how Hyper's core technology works and how it differentiates itself from other data engines and database systems. Transportation benefits are one way for companies to differentiate themselves in recruiting great talent. Using our own HR survey data, we were able to derive valuable insights into employee commute behavior and design a more effective transportation program. Expanding beyond our own internal initiative, Tableau has partnered with the City of Seattle and the Washington State Department of Transportation to help companies analyze employee commute behavior and benchmark their program against other employers. Cities like Seattle are experiencing unprecedented growth and increasing traffic congestion, and employers that are able to tailor their commute programs to meet their employees’ needs will be more successful in employee retention.
