Beyond set actions | Interactive statistics

As seen in devs on stage, Tableau is bringing powerful new capabilities to interactive analytics. The applications for interactive statistics are profound. For example, identifying time series that are most highly correlated with a selection, cluster analysis applied to interactive outlier detection, baselining a stock’s performance against the market in general, correlating market value of players to their team’s performance in the World Cup, and tracking the turnover of (or time to resell) a selected cohort of properties. We recommend also attending “Ready, Set, Action” for an introduction to concepts applied in this session.

A day in the life of a data analyst | The data duo in action

Have you ever been asked: - to build a pie chart with 100 slices? - to build sparklines that never decrease because partial months are perceived as tanking? - to label every point on a chart? - to replicate an Excel spreadsheet? A day in the life of an analyst is not easy. We often wear multiple hats and become translators for different parts of the business who often don’t understand data, processes, or even the business itself. In this hands-on session, Zen Masters, Pooja and Adam of TheDataDuo.com will walk through real-life business cases, including gathering requirements, building solutions on-the-fly, and delivering artifacts to our stakeholders. Using R and Tableau at Worthington Industries | Price optimization for high-mix, low-volume environments

Worthington Industries’ steel products are highly customized to end-user specifications. This high-mix, low-volume business makes price optimization using traditional methods difficult. Determining which products/markets to include or exclude from a given comparative analysis is often subjective and can lead to inconsistent recommendations. In our case, machine learning methods resulted in over-fitting due to insufficient training data. Tableau with R allows our analysts to test different market conditions using the power of predictive analytics (logistic regression) in a user-friendly environment. This tool represents the latest evolution in Worthington’s growing adoption of Tableau Server, deploying increasingly sophisticated features to our 50+ users.

Grassroots innovation at Tableau | Hackathon Hall of Fame 2018

Periodic “hackathons” are one of the tools we use to drive innovation at Tableau. A hackathon is a few days that are set aside for members of the engineering team to go off and try to build a new feature that interests and excites them. Some hackathon ideas have come from customer feedback and forum discussion, others are just wacky. Some hackathon projects have later developed into Tableau features. Come for an inside view of some of the best hacks of 2018! (Please note: All hacks are speculative or wacky. They might never become part of a Tableau release. We make no promises that any hack that you see will become part of the product, but hey, come have fun anyway!)

After the acquisition of the Hyper database technology, we shipped Tableau 10.5 with our brand-new Hyper data engine. This deep-dive talk sheds a light on Hyper's design philosophy and highlights the context in which the Hyper project was started. We use real-world analogies to illustrate how Hyper's core technology works and how it differentiates itself from other data engines and database systems. This session is not directly applicable to your daily work with Tableau, but lifts the curtain on one of our core technologies and provides food for thought on how the Hyper technology enables current and future Tableau customer scenarios.
